What is a service part CRU?

IBM Service provides replacement CRUs to you for you to install. CRU information and replacement instructions are shipped with your Machine and are available from IBM at any time on your request. CRUs are designated as being either Tier 1 or a Tier 2 CRU.

This program empowers you to repair your own machine - and it is easier than you may think. In situations where a computer failure can be attributed to an easily replaceable part ( a CRU), IBM Service sends you the new part. Without needing any special tools or skills, you swap the old part for the new one. It is simple. The best advantage: Really fast service for you .

Installation of Tier 1 CRUs is your responsibility.
If IBM installs a Tier 1 CRU at your request, you will be charged for the installation.

You may install a Tier 2 CRU yourself or request IBM to install it, at no additional charge, under the type of warranty service designated for your machine.

IBM specifies in the materials shipped with a replacement CRU whether a defective CRU must be returned to IBM. When return is required,
1) return instructions and a container are shipped with the replacement CRU
2) you may be charged for the replacement CRU if IBM does not receive the defective CRU within 15 days of your receipt of the replacement.

It is important to update the system software after replacing any parts! A list of the available code for your system can be found within the PureSystems downloads (Fix Central) Web page.

What is the difference between a CRU and a FRU?

A CRU is a Customer Replaceable Unit. A FRU is a Field Replaceable Unit. As detailed above, you the customer are expected to replace parts designated as CRUs without the assistance of on-site IBM Service personnel.

A FRU, however, requires that IBM Service personnel or an IBM Authorized Warranty Service Provider perform the replacement.

Where can I find a list of the CRUs and FRUs for my system?

You can find the System Service Parts Listing for each system within the Problem Determination and Service Guide (PDSG). The CRU and FRU numbers listed are what IBM Service personnel use to determine the appropriate replacement part to order and send to you.

Can IBM show me how to remove a defective CRU and install a new CRU?

You can view online video of how to remove and replace many of the typical CRUs on the CRU service parts installation and removal movies.

Are there steps to perform after I replace a CRU?

YES. You must update any microcode, firmware, and device drivers associated with the replaced CRU. A list of the available code for your system can be found within the PureSystems downloads (Fix Central) Web page.
