IBM Automatic Server Restart Service unexpectedly reboots - IBM eServer xSeries 232, 342

Symptom
The system unexpectedly reboots when the IBM Automatic Server Restart Service is installed and the IBM Remote Supervisor Adapter, option part number 09N7585, replacement part number (FRU) 36L9912, has not been installed in the server.

Affected configurations

The system may be any of the following IBM eServer xSeries servers:

  • xSeries 345, type 8670, any model
  • xSeries 342, type 8669, any model
  • xSeries 232, type 8668, any model

The system does not have an IBM Remote Supervisor Adapter installed.

The following network operating systems are affected:

  • Microsoft Windows NT, version 4.0, with any Service Pack applied
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional, with any Service Pack applied
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server, with any Service Pack applied
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server, with any Service Pack applied
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Datacenter Server, with any Service Pack applied

The 1.25 Device Driver for the Advanced System Management is affected.

Solution
Download and apply IBM Advanced System Management Device Driver for Microsoft Windows 2000 and Windows NT 4.0 v2.00 or higher.

Workaround
 Disable the IBM Automatic Server Restart Service and the I2C Device Driver.

Under Microsoft Windows NT

  1. Click the Start button
  2. Select Settings then Control Panel
  3. Double-click the Services icon
  4. Double-click the IBM Automatic Server Restart service in the Service pane
  5. In the Service window for IBM Automatic Server Restart, change the Startup type to Disabled
  6. Click the OK button
  7. Double-click the IBM Automatic Server Restart Executable service in the Service pane
  8. In the Service window for IBM Automatic Server Restart Executable, change the Startup type to Disabled
  9. Click the OK button
  10. Close the Services window
  11. Click the Start button
  12. From the open Control Panel window, double-click the Devices icon
  13. Click the I2C entry in the Devices window
  14. Click the Startup button
  15. In the Device window disable I2C
  16. Click OK
  17. Close the Devices window
  18. Reboot the system

 
Under Microsoft Windows 2000

  1. Click the Start button
  2. Select Settings then Control Panel
  3. Double-click the Administrative Tools icon
  4. Double-click Services
  5. Double-click the IBM Automatic Server Restart service in the Name pane
  6. In the IBM Automatic Server Restart properties window, change the Startup type to Disabled
  7. Click the OK button
  8. Double-click the IBM Automatic Server Restart Executable service in the Name pane
  9. In the IBM Automatic Server Restart Executable properties window, change the Startup type to Disabled
  10. Click the OK button
  11. Close the Services window
  12. From the open Administrative Tools window, double-click Computer Management
  13. Click Device Manager in the Tree pane
  14. On the window's menu, click View and ensure that "Show Hidden Devices" has a check mark next to it
  15. Expand "Non-Plug and Play Drivers" in the right pane
  16. Right-click the I2C entry and select Disable from the resulting popup menu
  17. Click Yes on the I2C disable device confirmation window
  18. Restart the server

Additional information
Systems experience unexpected reboots when the IBM Server Restart Service and I2C device driver are enabled without the Remote Supervisor Adapter installed.
