Blade may not be able to flash firmware within operating system - IBM BladeCenter HS22

Symptom

The HS22 blade may fail to update the following firmware from within the Operating System (OS):

  • Integrated Management Module (IMM)
  • Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI)
  • Dynamic System Analysis (DSA) Preboot

If updating from within the OS, the user may have more than one network device taking on the default Internet Protocol (IP) address when no network is found via Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP).

The firmware update process will return the following error:

  • Error connecting to IMM using IP address 169.254.95.118.
  • Please verify the LAN over USB interface is configured properly and active.
  • Error flashing firmware:3.

Affected configurations

The system may be any of the following IBM servers:

  • BladeCenter HS22, type 1936, any model
  • BladeCenter HS22, type 7870, any model

This tip is not software specific.
This tip is not option specific.

Workaround

Only the Universal Serial Bus (USB) Network device should be obtaining a default IP address assigned by the OS when attempting to flash or use any IMM/UEFI functions. If there are any installed network devices not obtaining a static or DHCP IP address, they will need to be disabled within the OS before flashing firmware.

Additional information

The IMM/UEFI flash tools may not communicate properly to the blade IMM if more than one device is obtaining an OS DHCP timeout address. This can prevent the blade from choosing the correct device to communicate with the IMM.
