BoMC and DSA Preboot boots to blank screen - IBM BladeCenter and System x

Symptom

When booting ToolsCenter, including Bootable Media Creator (BoMC) and Preboot Dynamic System Analysis (DSA Preboot), on one of the affected machine types, ToolsCenter boots to a blank screen.

Affected configurations

The system may be any of the following IBM servers:

  • BladeCenter HS22, type 1936, any model
  • BladeCenter HS22, type 7870, any model
  • BladeCenter HS22V, type 1949, any model
  • BladeCenter HS22V, type 7871, any model
  • BladeCenter HX5, type 7872, any model
  • System x3400 M3, type 7378, any model
  • System x3500 M3, type 7380, any model
  • System x3550 M3, type 7944, any model
  • System x3620 M3, type 7376, any model
  • System x3690 X5, type 7147, any model
  • System x3690 X5, type 7148, any model
  • System x3690 X5, type 7149, any model
    System x3690 X5, type 7192, any model
  • System x3850 X5, type 7143, any model
  • System x3850 X5, type 7145, any model
  • System x3850 X5, type 7146, any model
  • System x3850 X5, type 7191, any model

The system is configured with at least one of the following:

  • Bootable Media Creator 2.00, 2.20
  • IBM Dynamic System Analysis (DSA) Preboot 2.30, any edition
  • IBM Dynamic System Analysis (DSA) Preboot 2.33, any edition
  • IBM Dynamic System Analysis (DSA) Preboot 2.34, any edition
  • IBM Dynamic System Analysis (DSA) Preboot 3.00, any edition
  • IBM Dynamic System Analysis (DSA) Preboot 3.01, any edition
  • IBM Dynamic System Analysis (DSA) Preboot 3.02, any edition
  • IBM Dynamic System Analysis (DSA) Preboot 3.03, any edition
  • IBM Dynamic System Analysis (DSA) Preboot 3.10, any edition
  • IBM Dynamic System Analysis (DSA) Preboot 3.13, any edition
  • IBM Dynamic System Analysis (DSA) Preboot 3.14, any edition
  • IBM Dynamic System Analysis (DSA) Preboot 3.15, any edition

This tip is not option specific.

Solution

This behavior will be corrected in a future release of ToolsCenter.

The target date for this release is scheduled for fourth quarter 2011.

Workaround

Disable x2APIC in Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI).

Steps to disable x2APIC:

  1. Go into the system setup by pressing F1 during boot.
  2. Click on System Settings.
  3. Click on Processors.
  4. Inside the Processors menu, set the Extended APIC option to Disable.

Additional information

The x2APIC (Advanced Programmable Interrupt Controllers) architecture provides backward compatibility to the xAPIC architecture and forward extendability for future Intel platform innovations
