After update by UXSPI, the updated image does not turn to active for BNT switch - IBM BladeCenter and System x

Source

RETAIN tip: H205887

Symptom

When using UpdateXpress Service Pack Installer (UXSPI) to update the firmware of the Virtual Fabric 10 Gigabit (Gb) Switch Module for IBM BladeCenter, if the current active image is image2, then image1 is expected to be updated. However, in such case, it is still image2 that will be updated and after update, the active image will turn to image1.

Affected configurations

The system is configured with at least one of the following:

  • UpdateXpress Service Pack Installer, version 5.00

This tip is not system specific.

This tip is not option specific.

Note: This does not imply that the network operating system will work under all combinations of hardware and software.

Please see the compatibility page for more information: http://www.ibm.com/systems/info/x86servers/serverproven/compat/us/

Solution

This behavior will be corrected in a future release of UXSPI 12B.

The target date for this release is scheduled for second quarter 2012.

The file is or will be available by selecting the appropriate Product Group, type of System, Product name, Product machine type, and Operating system on IBM Support's Fix Central web page, at the following URL:

  http://www.ibm.com/support/fixcentral/

Workaround

After update, telnet or SSH to the switch and change the active image to image2 manually using the following command:

  /boot/image image2

Additional information

The logic used by UXSPI to determine the active image for the switch is not correct.
