Virtual Machine Kernel Panics when run on Microsoft Windows 2012 Hyper-V - IBM BladeCenter and System x

Symptom

The following kernel panic is displayed immediately upon start. The address will be unique to each system configuration:

  PANIC: early exception 06 rip 10:ffffffffxxxxxxxx error 0 cr2 0

Affected configurations

The system is configured with at least one of the following:

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6, any update

This tip is not system specific.

This tip is not option specific.

Note: This does not imply that the network operating system will work under all combinations of hardware and software.

Workaround

Use one of the followng three workarounds to avoid this issue:

Workaround 1

Add the following Non-Uniform Memory Access (NUMA) kernel start parameter:

  • NUMA=off

Workaround 2

Enable Dynamic Memory in the Microsoft Windows 2012 Hyper-V settings for this guest.

Workaround 3

Limit the memory assigned to this guest to less than that maximum memory allowed per host NUMA node.
