Security vulnerability with IBM Advanced Settings Utility (ASU) and IBM Bootable Media Creator (BoMC) when used under the Linux operating system (CVE-2012-3329) - IBM Flex System, System x and BladeCenter

Summary

  • When (1) ASU or BoMC are used in the Linux operating system, and (2) log files and/or temporary files created by ASU or BoMC are linked to system and/or user files, then the system and/or user files could be overwritten . Overwriting these system and/or user files could result in corruption of the operating system.

Vulnerability Details

CVE ID: CVE-2012-3329

Description:
ASU and BoMC use hardcoded temporary and/or log file names, which are predictable. Any user or malicious entity even without root access could use these predictable file names to create links between the temporary and/or log files and system and/or user files. When ASU and BoMC are used in the Linux operating system , the linking of these files causes the system and/or user files to be overwritten. If the system and/or user files are overwritten, the operating system could become corrupted. A fix has been developed to address this issue. See below for information about locating and installing the fix.

The following ASU code levels exhibit this behavior:

  • ASU level 3.62 or earlier and 3.70 through 9.21

The following BoMC code levels exhibit this behavior:

  • BoMC level 2.30 or earlier and 3.00 through 9.21
