Failures on 3.3 V and 5 V sensors, with fourth quarter 2012 IMM firmware installed - IBM BladeCenter HS22, HS22V

  • Applicable countries and regions

Source

RETAIN tip: H207649

Symptom

When users update to IMM fourth quarter, 2012, firmware version 1.35, systems start to show 3.3 V or 5 V voltage faults with error logs generated.

Affected Configurations

The system can be any of the following IBM servers:

  • BladeCenter HS22, type 7870, any model
  • BladeCenter HS22V, type 1949, any model
  • BladeCenter HS22V, type 7871, any model

This tip is not software specific.

This tip is not option specific.

Solution

This issue is fixed in Integrated Management Module (IMM) firmware version 1.37 E9C.

The file is available by selecting the appropriate Product Group, type of System, Product name, Product machine type, and Operating system on IBM Support's Fix Central web page, at the following URL:

Workaround

The following is a 'ipmitool' command for obtaining a sensor reading. Users have to employ in-band interface 'USB0' to query.

This command can be used to make sure that threshold errors observed at the blades are within 10 percent threshold values, and users do not need to replace the system boards:

# ipmitool -H 169.254.95.118 -U USERID -P PASSW0RD sdr elist
  ....
system board 3.3V | 16h | ok | 7.1 | 3.25 Volts
system board 5V | 17h | ok | 7.1 | 4.93 Volts
system board 12V | 18h | ok | 7.1 | 11.83 Volts
CMOS Battery | 1Ch | ok | 40.1 | 3.12 Volts
....

It is acceptable if values lie within approximately 10 percent of each other.

Sensor Reading Upper Threshold Lower Threshold
3 V 3.3 V 3.629 V 2.966 V
5 V 5.0 V 5.497 V 4.485 V
12 V 12.0 V 13.2 V 10.78 V
V Bat 3.0 V 3.188 V 2.7 V
