AenService (aendaemon.exe) error after running UpdateXpress - IBM Servers

Source

RETAIN tip: H207709

Symptom

After running UpdateXpress System Pack Installer (UXSPI) on a system with Microsoft Windows Server 2008 or 2008 R2, the following symptoms can be observed:

Windows System Event log (SEL) records an error event about the AenService service:

  Level: Error
Source: Service Control Manager
Event ID: 7000
Description: "The AenService service failed to start due to the following error: The system cannot find the file specified."

Windows Server Manager lists a service by the name 'AenService,' which points to the 'aendaemon.exe' file, which does not exist at the specified location.

Backup software reports that 'aendaemon.exe' was skipped because it was not present.

Note: This symptom can occur on any system supported by UXSPI.

This tip is not option specific.

Note: This does not imply that the network operating system will work under all combinations of hardware and software.

Workaround

This behavior has been corrected in a release of UXSPI version 9.41.

The file is available by selecting the appropriate Product Group, type of System, Product name, Product machine type, and Operating system on IBM Support's Fix Central web page, at the following URL:

As a workaround, on the affected system:

  1. Open a command prompt window on the local Windows Server Operating System desktop.
  2. Execute the Windows 'sc' command to manually remove the registered AenService service.

For example:

  > sc delete aenservice

Additional Information

To display the necessary updates, UXSPI collects data of the current configuration and compares it to the latest code level.

During the data collection phase, the AenService service is registered as part of the maxRAID (for example, IBM ServeRAID B5015) tool.

In some cases, even though the executable 'aendaemon.exe' is deleted successfully, the corresponding AenService service is not unregistered. Using the Windows 'sc' command manually removes the service registration.

Additionally, the symptom may occur after executing the Dynamic System Analysis (DSA) tool to collect logs.
