Chelsio Linux driver fails to install - IBM BladeCenter, Flex and System x

The installation of the Chelsio Uwire package (the source of the 'cxgb4' driver for the Chelsio T4 Ethernet adapters) fails with the following output:

Uninstalling previously installed packages (if any)
Resolve the above errors manually and restart the installation

Affected configurations

The system is configured with one or more of the following IBM Options:

  • Chelsio T420-BCH Chelsio 10 Gb Ethernet Unified Wire adapter, Option part number 46M2245 (FC 3070), any replacement part number (CRU)
  • Chelsio T420-CR High Performance, Dual-Port 10 Gb Ethernet Unified Wire adapter, Option part number 46M2237 (FC 3025), any replacement part number (CRU)
  • Chelsio T440-CR Quad-Port (SFP+) 10 Gb Ethernet PCI-E 2.0 Adapter, Option part number 46M2241 (3026), any replacement part number (CRU)

This behavior was corrected in the Chelsio Uwire driver.

The file is available by selecting the appropriate Product Group, type of System, Product name, Product machine type, and Operating system on IBM Support's Fix Central web page, at the following URL:


Run the installation program again.

Additional information

The Chelsio Uwire installer begins by running a second program to uninstall any previous Uwire installations found on the system.

The uninstall program occasionally has an issue writing its log file to the local drive. When this occurs, it ends with the referenced error. The installer also fails.

Due to the intermittent nature of the issue, rerunning the installation program always has succeeded in test and is considered the best solution.
