Broadcom 10 Gb Ethernet Adapter (49Y7912) has invalid MAC address - IBM Systems

Symptom

The Broadcom adapter will start up with invalid Media Access Control (MAC) addresses. The MAC address will be in the form of '00:00:00:00:17:<xx>.' The values for '<xx>' may vary. The MAC address can be viewed in system Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) F1 Setup menu under the Network section.

Depending on the configuration of a user's networking environment, users may experience connectivity issues.

Affected configurations

The system is configured with one or more of the following IBM Options:

  • Broadcom Dual-Port 10 Gb Virtual Fabric Adapter for IBM BladeCenter, Option part number 81Y3133, any replacement part number (CRU)
  • Broadcom NetXtreme II Dual-Port 10 GB Base-T Adapter for IBM System x, Option part number 49Y7910, any replacement part number (CRU)

The Broadcom firmware for the 49Y7912 is affected.

Solution

This issue has been fixed in the Broadcom firmware update package 2.1.9a for Microsoft Windows and 2.1.9b for Linux. This update package currently is posted on IBM Fix Central.

The file is available by selecting the appropriate Product Group, type of System, Product name, Product machine type, and Operating system on IBM Support's Fix Central web page, at the following URL:

Install the firmware update package using the firmware update instructions included with the update tool. After the update, power off the server then power back on for the fix to take affect.
