SSD drive firmware upgrade may cause SSD Drive medium errors - IBM Servers

Source

RETAIN tip: H21495

Symptom

An issue exists when updating firmware of the listed Solid-State Drive (SSD) drives if the SSD drive firmware is updated before updating the controller firmware.

One or more SSD drives may go off line when updating firmware from update package 'ibm_fw_mpt2sas_xxxxx-1.10.08,' or earlier to update package 'ibm_fw_mpt2sas_xxxxx-1.15.02,' or later, where 'xxxxx' is the name of the controller, for example, H1110 found in the following list.

There is a potential of losing one (1) or more of the following SSDs:

  • IBM-ESXSTXA2D202 GB3G
  • IBM-ESXSTXA2D204 GB3G
  • IBM-ESXSTXA2D208 GB3G

The issue occurs using any of these controllers:

Controller Option replacement part number
ServeRAID H1110 SAS/SATA Controller 81Y4492 81Y4494
ServeRAID H1135 SAS/SATA Controller

90Y4750

90Y4735

IBM Performance Optimized HBA 46M0912 46C8937
6 Gb SAS HBA SAS2008 90Y4579 46C8935
6 Gb SAS HBA SAS2008 46M0912 46C8937

There is no issue when upgrading if the controller already is at update package 1.15.02.00, or later.

This tip is not software specific.

The system has the symptom described above.

Solution

This behavior was corrected in update package release 15.1.02 of controller firmware.

The file is available by selecting the appropriate Product Group, type of System, Product name, Product machine type, and operating system on IBM Support's Fix Central web page, at the following URL:

http://www.ibm.com/support/fixcentral/

Note: Once a drive goes off line, there is no fix and data must be rebuilt or reloaded onto the drive. Controller driver updates already at 15.1.02, or later will not see this issue when upgrading.

Workaround

When conditions in the Symptoms section are present, update the controller first as indicated in the steps below:

  1. Update the controller firmware from package BIOS/FW/UEFI Update for ServeRAID xxxx Controller 1.10.36 to 1.15.02 or later.
(where: BIOS = Basic Input/Output System, FW = firmware, UEFI = Unified Extensible Firmware Interface)
  2. Update the SSD drive firmware.

Additional information

The issue existed in the controllers world wide (WW) name change during 'autoport' configuration. When the error occurs the WW name is intermittently changed during the device download process. The Fix corrects this condition.

There is no issue with the SSD firmware.
