H21608: Upgrading from level 7.77.1X.00 or 7.77.20.00 to level 7.86 might fail - IBM Disk Systems
RETAIN tip: H21608
Upgrading from IBM System Storage DS controller firmware level 7.77.18.00, 7.77.19.00, or 7.77.20.00 might fail. If the target controller firmware is level 7.86.xx.xx, the upgrade fails, and the following errors might be issued on the IBM DS Storage Manager Client:=================
If the target controller firmware level is another version of 7.77.xx.xx, 7.83.xx.xx, or 7.84.xx.xx, the upgrade will complete successfully. This issue affects only the IBM System Storage DS3500 and DCS3700 Storage Controllers.
The system can be any of the following IBM servers:

This tip is not option specific.
The following system firmware levels are affected: 7.77.18.00, 7.77.19.00, and 7.77.20.00.
The fix for this issue was released in the level 7.77.22.00 and later levels of controller firmware.
The above referenced controller firmware is available by selecting the appropriate Product Group, type of System, Product name, Product machine type, and Operating system on IBM Support's Fix Central web page, at the following URL:
Upgrade to level 7.77.22.00 or a later level of 7.77.xx.xx controller firmware, as an interim step before upgrading to level 7.86.xx.xx.
There are a number of internal files that are required to be staged during the controller firmware upgrade process.
The total number of files that need to be staged is dependent upon both the base and target firmware levels. If the total number of files to be staged is greater than the number defined on the base firmware level, then this issue will occur.
The fix increases the number of allowable staged files in the 7.77.xx.xx release.
