UEFI PXE start may require XCAT settings change - IBM IBM System Cluster 1350 (1410)

RETAIN tip: H206622

In the case where 'pxelinux.0' is being served by the management node to a Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) based server, the server will not complete the Preboot eXecution Environment (PXE) start up.

This can be verified by looking at the output on the screen during PXE start. If the file 'pxelinux.0' is listed as being downloaded, the system will no PXE start as expected.

The following is the output on that will appear on the user's screen when this issue occurs:

  UEFI PXE PciRoot(0x0)/Pci(0x3,0x0)/Pci(0x0,0x0)/MAC(0002C912EDB0,0x1)/IPv4(,0x0,DHCP,,,

Start PXE over IPv4.

Affected configurations

The system may be any of the following IBM servers:

  • IBM System Cluster 1350, type 1410, any model

This tip is not software specific.

This tip is not option specific.

  1. Ensure that Extreme Cloud Administration Toolkit (xCAT) 2.7 is installed and this can be done by running the command:

      rpower --version
  2. xCAT should be updated to a 2.7 build. The newest version of xCAT can be downloaded from: http://xcat.sourceforge.net/#download

  3. Check the settings for the node to confirm it is sending the UEFI-capable bootloader. This can be discovered and then set with the following two (2) commands:

      nodels $NODE_NAME noderes.netboot

    nodech $NODE_NAME noderes.netboot=xnba
The server should be set to legacy start, which will allow the server to UEFI PXE start as expected.

Additional information

The xCAT 2.7 build is required for UEFI PXE starting.
