Follow the instructions in this document in sequential order unless these instructions advise you otherwise. Windows and messages might differ from those in this document. Throughout this document, the term select is used to denote the use of arrow keys, the Tab key, Alt + a letter combination, or the mouse to make a selection.
References to optional hardware in this document do not imply support of that hardware. For information about supported options, see the ServerProven information for your blade server at http://www.ibm.com/servers/eserver/serverproven/compat/us/
You must have the following software and hardware for the installation:
- A registered copy of Sun Solaris 10 Operating System 1/06.
- Supported hard disk drives. Go to http://www.ibm.com/servers/eserver/serverproven/compat/us/ for the ServerProven list of supported options and part numbers for the blade server.
- One blank diskette to create a BIOS code update diskette. You might need additional blank diskettes for firmware updates.

To install Sun Solaris 10 Operating System 6/06 or later, complete the following steps:
- Turn on the blade server.
- When the prompt "Press F1 for Configuration/Setup" is displayed, press F1.
- Select Advanced Setup then select Baseboard Management Controller (BMC) Settings, and Select Reboot System on NMI.
- Press the Right Arrow or Left Arrow key until Disabled is selected.
- Press Esc twice.
- Select Save Settings.
- Insert the Solaris 10 Software 1 for x86 Platforms CD into the CD drive and boot the system.
- Follow the instructions that guide you through the installation.
- The system will appear to hang when the rebooting... message is displayed. Eject the CD and manually power cycle the system, or eject the CD and power cycle the system through the BladeCenter Management Module.
- When the installation is complete, log into the system, and then select, in sequential order, Options, Sessions, and then Common Desktop Environment (CDE).
- To obtain the best security and performance from the server, apply all current software upgrades and security patches. These are available from the Sun Solaris Support Web site http://sunsolve.sun.com/.
To install Sun Solaris 10 Operating System 1/06, complete the steps in the following sections.
To prepare the hardware, complete the following steps:
- Remove the blade server from the BladeCenter unit, and remove the blade server cover.
- If problems occur when you attempt to install with multiple adapters or devices, for the initial installation, remove all adapters and devices that are not required for the base operating system to be installed. Disconnect any tape drives or external SCSI devices temporarily. After the operating system is starting without errors, reinstall the removed adapters and devices one at a time. This procedure simplifies the installation process.
- If you plan to use an external storage enclosure, set up the enclosure using the instructions that come with the enclosure.
- If you are using internal hard disk drives, install them into the blade server drive bays.
- Install the blade server cover.
- Slide the blade server into the BladeCenter unit, and then continue to 4.2 Updating the system firmware.
To update the system firmware, complete the following steps:
- Turn on the blade server.
- When the IBM logo is displayed, press F1 to start the Configuration/Setup Utility program.

Make sure that the BIOS code is at the latest revision level that is available from the IBM Web site. Choose one of the following options:
- If you need to update the BIOS code, continue to 4.2.1 Updating the BIOS code.
- If you do not need to update the BIOS code, select Load Default Settings, and then select Save and exit.
- Continue to 4.3 Configuring hard disk drives using the LSI SAS controller.
To update the BIOS code, complete the following steps:
- Download the applicable image from the IBM Support Web site. The image is a self-extracting, executable file that creates the flash diskettes.
- To create the diskettes, run the executable file and follow the instructions on the screen.
- To update the BIOS code, complete the steps in the corresponding readme file.
- After you have updated the BIOS code, restart the blade server. When the IBM logo is displayed, press F1 to start the Configuration/Setup Utility program.
- Select Load Default Settings, and then select Save and exit.
- Continue to 4.2.2 Updating the diagnostic code.
To update the diagnostic code, complete the following steps:
- Download the applicable image from the IBM Support Web site. The image is a self-extracting, executable file that creates the flash diskettes.
- To create the diskettes, run the executable file and follow the instructions on the screen.
- To update the diagnostics code, complete the steps in the corresponding readme file.
- Continue to 4.2.3 Updating the baseboard management controller firmware.
To update the baseboard management controller firmware, complete the following steps:
- Download the applicable image from the IBM Support Web site. The image is a self-extracting, executable file that creates the flash diskettes.
- To create the diskettes, run the executable file and follow the instructions on the screen.
- To update the baseboard management controller firmware, complete the steps in the corresponding readme file.
- Continue to 4.3 Configuring hard disk drives using the LSI SAS controller.
To configure the hard disk drives using the LSI SAS controller, complete the following steps:
- Turn on the blade server and press Ctrl+C when prompted.
- Select the SAS controller (SAS1064E) from the Adapter List.
- Select SAS Topology.
- Select Direct Attach Devices to expand the device list.

To format each hard disk individually, complete the following steps. Formatting might take up to 30 minutes, depending on the drive size.
- Highlight a device and press Alt-D.
- Select Format.
- Press F to format the drive.
- When the formatting is completed, press ESC twice.
- Repeat these steps for each physical device in the list.
- Press Esc.
- Select Advanced Adapter Properties, and then select Restore Defaults.
- Press Esc twice.
- Select Save changes then exit this menu.
- Press Esc.
- Select Exit the Configuration Utility and Reboot.
- Continue to 4.4 Installing Sun Solaris 10 Operating System 1/06.
To install Sun Solaris 10 Operating System 6/06 or later, complete the following steps:
- Turn on the blade server.
- When the prompt "Press F1 for Configuration/Setup" is displayed, press F1.
- Select Advanced Setup then select Baseboard Management Controller (BMC) Settings, and Select Reboot System on NMI.
- Press the Right Arrow or Left Arrow key until Disabled is selected.
- Press Esc twice.
- Select Save Settings. Insert the Solaris 10 Software 1 for x86 Platforms CD into the CD drive and boot the system.
- In the GNU GRUB screen, press Enter.
- At the prompt, to select Solaris Interactive (default), press 1.
- At the Proposed Window System Configuration screen, press Enter.
- In the Select a Language window, type 0 for English, and then press Enter.
- In the Welcome window, select Next.
- In the Network Connectivity window, select Networked, and then select Next.
- In the Configure Multiple Network Interfaces window, select all of the interfaces that you want to configure, and then select Next.
- If you selected multiple interfaces to configure, in the Primary Network Interface window, select which interface will be the primary network interface, and then select Next.

For each interface you want to configure, complete the following steps:
- In the "DHCP for <interface name>" window, select the applicable option, and then select Next.
- If you selected No in the previous step, in the "Host Name for <interface name>" window, enter the host name for the system, and then select Next.
- In the "IP Address for <interface name>" window, enter the IP address for this interface, and then select Next.
- In the "Netmask for <interface name>" window, make sure that the netmask is correct for your network, and then select Next.
- In the "IPv6 for <interface name>" window, select No, and then select Next.
- In the "Set the Default Route for <interface name>" window, select None, and then select Next.
- In the Kerberos window, select No, and then select Next.
- In the Name Service window, select None, and then select Next.
- In the Time Zone window, select Geographic Continent/Country/Region, and then select Next.
- In the Continent and Country window, select your time zone, and then select Next.
- In the Date and Time window, enter your current date and time, and then select Next.
- In the Root Password window, type a new root password twice, and then select Next.
- In the Confirm Information window, make sure that all information is correct, and then select Confirm.
- In the Welcome window, select Next.
- In the Installer Options window, select Next.
- In the Notice window, select OK.
- In the Specify Media window, select CD/DVD, and then select Next.
- In the License window, read the license, select Accept, and then select Next.
- In the Select Type of Install window, if Default Install is selectable, select Default Install, select Next, and then continue to step 33. Otherwise, continue to the next step.
- In the Select Software Localization window, select the applicable regions and localization, and then select Next.
- In the Select System Locale window, select the initial locale, and then select Next.
- In the Select Products window, select the products you want to install, and then select Next.
- In the Additional Products window, select None, and then select Next.
- In the Select Solaris Software Group window, select Developer Group, and then select Next.
- In the Disk Selection window, select Next.
- In the "Select Disks for fdisk Partition Customization" window, select Next.
- In the "Customize fdisk Partitions -- Disk c0d0" window, select Next.
- In the Lay Out File Systems window, select Next.
- In the Ready to Install window, select Install Now.
- In the Pausing window, press Continue to proceed immediately.
- In the next Pausing window, press Continue to proceed immediately. This will cause the system to reboot.
- The system will appear to hang when the rebooting... message is displayed. Eject the CD and manually power cycle the system, or eject the CD and power cycle the system through the BladeCenter Management Module.
- In the GNU GRUB screen, select Solaris 10 1/06.
- While booting, when prompted to override the system default NFS version 4 domain name, type no, and then press Enter.

For each of the remaining Solaris 10 Software <#> for x86 Platforms CDs (usually 2, 3, and 4), complete the following steps:
- In the Specify Media window, select CD/DVD, and then select Next.
- In the Insert Disc window, insert the Solaris 10 Software <#> for x86 Platforms CD, and then select OK.
- In the Ready to Install window, select Install Now.
- In the Pausing window, press Continue.
- The system will appear to hang when the rebooting... message is displayed. Eject the CD and manually power cycle the system, or eject the CD and power cycle the system through the BladeCenter Management Module.
- Log into the system, and then select, in sequential order, Options, Sessions, and then Common Desktop Environment (CDE).
- To obtain the best security and performance from the blade server, apply all current software upgrades and security patches. These are available from the Sun Solaris Support Web site http://sunsolve.sun.com/.
