Supported systems: IBM  System x3650 M2 Type 7947 Follow the network operating system (NOS) installation instructions provided in this document in sequential order unless these instructions advise you otherwise. Windows and messages might differ from those in this document. Throughout this document, the term select is used to denote the use of arrow keys, the tab key, or Alt + a letter combination to make a selection from a menu or to denote the use of a mouse to choose an option from a drop down menu . The term click is used to denote the use of a mouse to make a selection.

1.0 What you will need

You must have the following software and hardware for the installation:

  • A licensed copy of Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2.
  • Supported hard disk drives. Go to http://www.ibm.com/servers/eserver/serverproven/compat/us/ for the ServerProven list of supported options and part numbers for IBM System x.
  • 64-bit device driver for the LSI Logic Fusion - MPT SAS controller. Download this device driver before you install Windows Server 2008 R2.

2.0 Where to download device drivers and files

You can download device drivers and files from the following sites:

3.0 Installation instructions for Windows Server 2008 R2

  1. To install Windows Server 2008 R2 complete the following steps:
  2.  Insert the Windows Server 2008 R2 DVD into the DVD drive.
  3.  Turn on the x3650 M2 server.
  4.  When you are prompted with the message "Press any key to boot from cd or dvd", press any key to start the server from the Windows Server 2008 R2 Setup DVD. The files are copied from the setup DVD. This process takes a few minutes.
  5. In the language selection window, choose the appropriate language and click Next.
  6. Click Install Now.
  7. Select the version of Windows Server 2008 R2 you would like to install.
  8. Click Next. 
  9. Scroll down and read the license agreement.  
  10. Select I accept the license terms and click Next.
  11. Select Custom (advanced).
  12. Go to step 13 if there is no warning message about the disk, otherwise see A or B below:
        A.  If you see a warning message about the disk and the disk shown as "Offline",  follow these steps:
  •  If a new volume has been created, the “Unallocated Space” shown on Disk0 as “Offline.”
  •  Notice a warning message in the bottom left stating: “Windows cannot be installed on this disk! (Show Details)”
  •  Click on the error message. Windows suggests it could mark the disk as Online. Click OK to do so.
  •  Windows marks the disk as Online, but the warning still exists.
  •  If the user clicks again on the warning message the additional details say: “Windows cannot be installed to this disk. This computer’s hardware may not support booting  to this disk. Ensure that the disk’s controller is enabled in the computer’s BIOS menu.”
  •  That message is erroneous and can be ignored.
  •  Continue on from step 13.
        B.  If you see a warning message about the disk,  follow these steps:
  • Notice a warning message in the bottom left stating: “Windows cannot be installed on this disk! (Show Details)”
  • Click on the error message. “Windows cannot be installed to this disk. This computer’s hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure that the disk’s controller  is enabled in the computer’s BIOS menu.”
  •  That message is erroneous and can be ignored.
  •  Continue on from step 13.
  1. Simply highlight the unpartitioned space on the new disk and click “Drive options (advanced)”
  2. Click “New” and a box appears suggesting a size for the new partition.
  3. Adjust as desired and click “Apply.”
  4. A pop-up message informs the user about additional partitions that Windows must create. Click OK.
  5. WS08R2 creates a 100MB System Partition, a 128MB MSR(Reserved) partition and a Primary partition.
  6. Leave the Primary partition highlighted and click Next.
  7. The user can ignore the warning message which states that Windows cannot be installed on this partition.
  8. Click Next and Windows continues installing.
  9. Setup formats the selected partition and copies the applicable files to the drive partition. This process takes several minutes. When the installation is complete, the server restarts automatically. 
  10. After Windows Server 2008 R2 restarts, you are prompted to change the administrator password before you can log on. 
  11. Use the Microsoft Server 2008 R2 Roles and Features functions to set up the server for your specific needs.
  12. Use the product key supplied with Windows Server 2008 R2 to activate your installation.  

4.0 Post-installation instructions: Updating device drivers

To make sure that the latest device drivers and firmware for the x3650 M2 server are installed, follow the instructions in the README (.txt) file that is included with the device driver.

4.1 System x Website

To download the device driver and firmware packages and the installation instructions for your x3650 M2 server, complete the following steps:

  1. Go to Software and device drivers
  2. Click x3650 M2 bookmark this site to check for periodic updates of device drivers and firmware files, such as BIOS, IMM, or Ethernet device firmware.
