Duplicate IP address 192.199.199.x - IBM BladeCenter

Source

RETAIN tip: H197407

Symptom

A network trace of a blade interface may reveal duplicate internal management network Internet Protocol (IP) addresses.

Affected configurations

The system may be any of the following IBM servers:

  • BladeCenter E, type 7967, any model
  • BladeCenter E, type 8677, any model
  • BladeCenter H, type 7989, any model
  • BladeCenter H, type 8852, any model
  • BladeCenter HT, type 8740, any model
  • BladeCenter HT, type 8750, any model
  • BladeCenter S, type 1948, any model
  • BladeCenter S, type 7779, any model
  • BladeCenter S, type 8886, any model

The system is configured with one or more of the following IBM Options:

  • BladeCenter Advanced Management Module, Option part number 25R5778, replacement part number (FRU) 25R5777
  • BladeCenter Redundant KVM/Management Module, Option part number 48P7055, replacement part number (FRU) 73P9326

This tip is not software specific.

Additional information

The Advanced Management Module (AMM) uses IP addresses 192.199.199.21 and 192.199.199.22 to communicate with the blades' service processors.

Blade service processors use IP address range 192.199.199.81 - 192.199.199.94. This IP address range cannot be altered with AMM firmware 3.54D (Build ID BPET54D) or later.

Performing a network trace of a blade interface mirrored to another chassis may report that duplicate addresses are in use.

Duplicate addresses may also be reported if a network trace of a blade interface is performed in an environment where switches are stacked between chassis.

Seeing duplicate addresses when performing such mirrored traces is not indicative of an issue.
