Source

RETAIN tip: H207307

Symptom

The Intel X520 10 Gigabit (Gb) Ethernet adapter's Option ROM is disabled by default and therefore the adapter is not seen in UEFI and not available as a Preboot eXecution Environment (PXE) resource.

Affected Configurations

The system is configured with one or more of the following IBM options:

  • Intel X520 10 Gigabit Dual-Port Ethernet SFP+ Embedded Adapter for IBM System x, option 49Y7980, any replacement part number
  • Intel X520-DA2 10 Gigabit Dual-Port Ethernet SFP+ Adapter for IBM System x, option 49Y7960, any replacement part number

Workaround

The following steps will enable the option ROMs on the Intel adapters:

  1. Create the ISO for the Intel software to a CD.
  2. Open the Intel Software.
  3. Open the 'Start_UEFI_ISO' folder.
  4. Copy 'efi_boot_update.iso' to a Hard Disk Drive (HDD).
  5. Burn 'efi_boot_update.iso' to a CD.
  6. Insert the 'efi_boot_update' CD into the server with the Intel NICs.
  7. Start to the 'efi_boot_update' CD.
  8. Wait until the 'Shell>' prompt is displayed.
  9. At the 'Shell>' prompt, enter this command:

      Shell>startutil64e.efi -all -FE
  10. Press Enter.
  11. After the procedure finishes, type 'exit.'
  12. Restart the server.
  13. Press F1 to enter UEFI.
  14. In UEFI, select System Settings -> Network, to see the adapters.

If the UEFI 'efi_boot_update' CD does not start, complete the following steps, which should allow the CD to start:

  1. Restore UEFI defaults.
  2. Load the CD and follow the instructions that Product Engineering (PE) provided previously.
