QLogic CNA: Intermittant link drop when connected to Cisco 4001i - IBM BladeCenter

Symptom

The QLogic Dual-Port 10 GB Converged Network Adapter (CFFh) for IBM BladeCenter, Option part number 42C1830 (QMI8242), to the Cisco Nexus 4001i Switch default Ethernet port speed setting 'Auto' fails to negotiate correctly and changes to 1 Gb/s, which is not supported on the adapter.

This occurs at random and takes the port down.

Affected configurations

The system may be any of the following IBM servers:

  • BladeCenter HS22, type 1911, any model
  • BladeCenter HS22, type 1936, any model
  • BladeCenter HS23E, type 8038, any model
  • BladeCenter HS23E, type 8039, any model
  • BladeCenter HX5, type 1909, any model
  • BladeCenter HX5, type 1910, any model
  • BladeCenter HX5, type 7872, any model

The system is configured with one or more of the following IBM Options:

  • QLogic Dual-Port 10 GB Converged Network Adapter (CFFh) for IBM BladeCenter, Option part number 42C1830, any replacement part number (CRU)

This tip is not software specific.

Workaround

Log in to the Cisco 4001i switch module and configure the port speed to:

  10g not auto

switch# configure terminal
switch(config)# interface ethernet 1/4
switch(config-if)# speed 10000
