Hynix DIMMs may cause system boot failures - IBM BladeCenter and System x

Source

RETAIN tip: H001965

Symptom

After installing a new memory option or FRU, the system hangs in POST with no video, memory error beeps, memory error message, or the system boots up showing lesser memory.

Affected configurations

The system may be any of the following:

  • BladeCenter HS20, Type 8678, any model
  • BladeCenter HS20, Type 8832, any model
  • BladeCenter JS20, Type 8842, any model
  • xSeries 455, Type 8855, any model
  • xSeries 445, Type 8870, any model
  • xSeries 382, Type 8834, any model
  • xSeries 365, Type 8862, any model
  • xSeries 365, Type 8861, any model

  • xSeries 225, Type 8647, any model
  • xSeries 206, Type 8482, any model
  • eServer 325, Type 8835, any model

The system may be any of the following IBM IntelliStation systems:

  • IntelliStation E Pro, Type 6216, any model
  • IntelliStation E Pro, Type 6226, any model
  • IntelliStation M Pro, Type 6219, any model
  • IntelliStation M Pro, Type 6220, any model
  • IntelliStation M Pro, Type 6230, any model
  • IntelliStation Z Pro, Type 6221, any model

Solution

Use a memory DIMM from any qualified supplier, except Hynix, or a Hynix module that does not have ST Micro EEPROM with date code 9423 and 9424.

Workaround

None

Additional information

Warning: If your system is presently working without memory issues, this Tip does not apply.

Some Hynix memory modules could cause a system failure during a cold or warm boot. The symptoms are no video, memory error beeps in POST, the system boots up with memory errors, or the system can't recognize the newly installed memory. The root cause has been determined to be related to a batch of faulty EEPROM from ST Microelectronic with date codes 9423 and 9424. The EEPROM is an 8-pin device, located on one side, at the center of the memory module.

A two step visual inspection is needed to find these defective memory Modules:

  1. Check Part number and associated Header Codes. (see list below)

i.e. Header Code on label 11S38L4033ZJ1TNS48A03J
38L4033 is the part number xxTNS is the Header Code

  2. Check EEPROM for date code 9423 and 9424. (May need a magnifing glass)

Following is a list of part numbers and the associated header codes affected by this problem:
