System unable to boot from ODD or USB media - IBM System x3100 M4, x3250 M4

Symptom

The system is unable to boot from optical disk drive (ODD) or Universal Serial Bus (USB) media, stopping on the screen with a blinking cursor in the top-left corner.

This symptom occurs following these steps:

  1. Insert bootable Compact Disc (CD) or Digital Versatile Disc (DVD) into the ODD. The CD/DVD could contain a bootable image such as SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 (SLES10) SP3, Dynamic System Analysis (DSA) Preboot, or Bootable Media Creator (BoMC).
  2. Power on the system and press F12 and select the Boot option to boot from ODD.
  3. When the "boot:" screen appears, press and hold the power button until the system shuts down.
  4. Press the power button again to power on the system then press F12 and select boot option to boot from ODD or USB media.

Affected configurations

The system may be any of the following IBM servers:

  • System x3100 M4, type 2582, any model
  • System x3250 M4, type 2583, any model

This tip is not software specific.

This tip is not option specific.

The following system BIOS or UEFI level(s) are affected:

  • UEFI jqe128a 1.00

Solution

This behavior was corrected in Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) firmware.

The file is or will be available by selecting the appropriate Product group, type of System, Product name, Product machine type, and operating system on IBM Support's Fix Central web page, at the following URL:

Workaround

Remove and reconnect the AC power cord.

Additional information

The root cause of this symptom is a status bit related to legacy USB device that does not get cleared when the system is powered on or off.
